In the most cases, the installation of the new system is pretty straight-forward, either a plumber or service tech should be able to accomplish readily or some practices even choose to install the new system themselves. Since 2013, most dental practices on public water and sewer systems in Michigan have been required to have an amalgam separator installed inline between the operatories and the vacuum pump to prevent mercury effluent from contaminating the water supply. The state of Michigan incentivized affected dentists to install amalgam separators by offering a $300 grant to help offset the cost of purchasing and maintaining the equipment.
