COVID-19 Fraud Warnings
As reported by CNN and other media outlets, the Better Business Bureau is warning the public not to post images of their COVID-19 vaccination card on social media.
• The card includes the recipient’s full name, date of birth, and other sensitive information.
• Scammers are using this information to obtain personal information. In addition, scammers are creating imitation cards from the images.
• Instead, vaccine recipients who want to post their vaccination status on social media should use the vaccination sticker.
In addition, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is warning of fraudulent activity related to the COVID-19 vaccine. Essentially, scammers are leveraging public interest in the vaccine to acquire personal information. While mostly targeting Medicare beneficiaries, anyone could fall victim to these schemes. Be on alert for phone calls, door-to-door sales, unsolicited emails, and too-good-to-be-true social media posts that phish for personal information, including insurance ID number, or payment with the false promise of:
• early access to the COVID-19 vaccine,
• holding a vaccine appointment, or
• special program offerings, such as testing kits or personal protection equipment.
Also, scammers have recently recreated health department websites in an attempt to obtain personal information. These fake sites may be linked in phishing emails and social media posts.
HHS Announces Phase 3 Of Provider Relief Fund
The ADA News (10/1, Solana) reports the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is allocating $20 billion in new funding for health care providers, including many dentists. The Provider Relief Fund was established by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act — known as the CARES Act — and allows dental providers to apply for payments made for health care-related expenses or lost revenue attributable to the pandemic. The funds, distributed through the Health Resources and Services Administration, is part of the Phase 3 General Provider Relief Fund. Eligible dentists can begin applying for funds Oct. 5 through Nov. 6.

• How COVID-19 effects other types of insurance: In general, property and casualty insurance policies may not treat pandemics as covered perils, while life, health and disability policies may provide some coverage depending on policy provisions and normal claims procedures.
