The PPP Claims Team understands the difficulty and confusion our insured dentists have experienced and continue to experience throughout the COVID-19 crisis. We also understand the number one question our dentists are dealing with right now is “When can I return to work, and if so will my insurance coverage protect me?” We recommend that dentists follow their local or state government and Dental Board instructions and guidance as to their operations for future procedures and protocols related to re-opening their practices.

The PPP Claims Team stands ready to assist insured dentists in the event an incident arises while practicing that may cause concern. It could be an actual claim, a law suit or even improper patient care. Although an opinion on hypothetical claim scenarios cannot be provided, our team will expeditiously review all claim reports and provide timely responses to questions and concerns. While we do not anticipate the pandemic to precipitate a significant number of professional liability claims, be aware that your PPP professional liability policy does not contain specific exclusions for claims involving communicable diseases, such as COVID-19. As with any other claim, if you believe an incident has occurred involving COVID-19 that could result in a claim being brought against you, you should notify your agent at MDA Insurance so the incident can be reported and reviewed.”

How COVID-19 effects other types of insurance: In general, property and casualty insurance policies may not treat pandemics as covered perils, while life, health and disability policies may provide some coverage depending on policy provisions and normal claims procedures.
