Winter risk management for your practice and home

Business owners’ and homeowners’ insurance risks tend to increase during winter months. Inclement weather that creates a danger of slip-and-fall accidents is the main factor to consider. Frozen water pipes that rupture is another significant risk during winter months, particularly if buildings are unoccupied for lengthy periods, such as during holiday breaks or vacations. There are a few simple ways to prevent these problems from occurring, which could result in costly claims and the possibility of higher insurance premiums in the future. Whether at home or at your office, be certain that:
• All pedestrian pathways are clear of snow and ice. Plow, shovel and salt whenever snow accumulates.
• Make sure rugs near entryways remain flat and do not slip when people walk on them. Change saturated entryway rugs or mats and replace them with dry ones.
• Ensure icicles do not hang over doorways. Remove icicles to ensure they do not fall on those entering the building, or drip and cause ice on the ground or stairs below them.
• Insulate water pipes that may be vulnerable to freezing if power is lost for extended periods. Pipes running through crawl spaces and other unheated areas are particularly vulnerable.
