Plan now to begin electronically prescribing all medications Oct. 1, or risk being delayed

On Oct. 1, Michigan doctors will be required to electronically prescribe ALL medications. Before you tell yourself, “there’s plenty of time,” please learn about the dangers of delaying from the experiences of other states with new e-prescribe laws.
If you also prescribe controlled substances, it could take you a couple of weeks to get registered and begin e-prescribing those specific drugs. If you delay as late as August or September, the process could take even longer. Across the country, doctors are finding pharmacies rejecting their traditional prescribing methods when submitting prescriptions for controlled substances. Currently, there are registration backlogs within the Drug Enforcement Agency, the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System and various state boards of dentistry. These agencies are working hard to process the high volume of doctors who signed up just before, or even right after, their state laws took effect at the beginning of 2021.
Importantly, e-prescribing all medications provides more than just compliance. It reduces steps in your daily workflow, speeding up the entire process. You can e-prescribe from your desktop computer, laptop, tablet or phone. And, you benefit from single-click access to the Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS) for quick patient prescription history checks.
Don’t delay in getting set up to e-prescribe now, regardless of whether you ever prescribe controlled substances.
