The U.S. Office of Civil Rights consistently has identified five issues in investigation of HIPAA complaints that result in corrective action. From 2015-2020, the impermissible uses and disclosures of protected health information and issues around safeguarding information have been the top two areas of concern. In 2020, access, administrative safeguards and technical safeguards rounded out the top five. In Michigan, 27% of the HIPAA complaints investigated resulted in corrective action.
