2.2 Million Records Exposed in McLaren Health System Hack; Dentists Beware

McLaren Health Care, headquartered in Grand Blanc, Mich., last fall announced an unauthorized network penetration that may have exposed protected personal and health information of about 2.2 million people. According to a post on the company’s website, the data accessed may have included patients’ “Social Security number, health insurance information, date of birth, and medical information including billing or claims information, diagnosis, physician information, medical record number, Medicare/Medicaid information, prescription/medication information, diagnostic results and treatment information.” The health care system was required to mail notices to individuals who may have been affected by the breach.
MDA Insurance offers the Beazley Breach Response cyber liability and data breach insurance policy to help protect dental practices. Like other cyber insurers, Beazley now has underwriting requirements that may impact the cost of coverage. To obtain the most favorable rates, dentists must employ good data security procedures and preventive safeguards such as:
• Two-factor or multi-factor authentication for accessing any data stored in the cloud, such as cloud-based email, and for remote access to your network.
• Backing up critical data to a cloud-based service. Backups must be tested to ensure they are recoverable when needed.
• Training of employees by using techniques such as phishing e-mail simulations and interactive phishing training.
