U.S. Embassy issues crucial medical insurance warning for travelers

On Feb. 16, the U.S Embassy in the Dominican Republic issued the statement, “The Department of State strongly urges U.S. citizens to consult with their medical insurance company prior to departure to confirm whether their policy applies overseas and if it covers emergency expenses such as a medical evacuation.” “Keep in mind that many foreign doctors and hospitals require payment in cash before providing treatment. A medical evacuation to the United States can cost well over $50,000, and uninsured travelers often face serious financial and logistical challenges.” Read their full statement here.
