Consulting on new federal health care law? Here's help

The Patent Protection and Affordability Care Act was signed into law by President Obama on March 23, 2010. The companion bill, the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act was signed into law March 30, 2010. Together, these two laws constitute the new federal health care reform law. There is a high degree of uncertainty associated with the impact of reform legislation as key regulatory guidance is still pending. MDA Insurance is providing the document Helping Group Health Plan Sponsors Navigate the Federal Health Care Reform, an easy-to-read synopsis from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, that outlines key provisions of the Patient Protection and Portability Act. This will help you understand the basics of its impact on health insurance groups. Questions? Contact MDA Insurance at (800) 860-2272.

The Major Differences Between Flexible Blue and Community Blue

  • Preventive care is an optional rider with Flexible Blue.
  • With Flexible Blue, the deductible must be met before any claims are paid by BCBSM.  This means that in the case of a family contract, no claims will be paid until the entire deductible is met — even if one family member met the individual amount.
  • There are no "flat" copays for office visits with Flexible Blue.
  • There is no fourth quarter carryover with Flexible Blue.
  • Prescription drugs and medical have one integrated deductible with Flexible Blue.
  • Under Flexible Blue, if the group is also offering prescription drug coverage, it must be a Flexible Blue drug plan.
  • Deductible and coinsurance applies to all services, including human organ transplants, with Flexible Blue.

There are three different Flexible Blue plans to choose from and all three can be modified by adding preventive care, prescription coverage, and/or different percentage copay options.
