You & the New Health Care Claims Tax

Effective Jan. 1, a 1 percent tax will be applicable to all health insurance claims made in Michigan by Michigan residents. Dental and vision claims are subject to the tax, as are nearly all medical-related claims. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and BCS Life will begin applying a 0.75 percent factor to plans as a line item on each premium statements. VSP, which provides vision insurance to MDA members, is formulating its response to the Michigan claims tax. Review the FAQ here.

A gentle reminder

MDA Insurance quarterly billed medical coverage premiums are due on the first day of the month of each quarter. Don't let your coverage lapse-it's just too important! If you have any questions, regarding your payment, please contact us directly at (800) 860-2272.

Important Note

If employees leave your office and you need to cancel their insurance, please don't forget to cancel their Delta Dental coverage (if they have this insurance) in addition to their BCS individual coverage. Both contracts need to be cancelled in writing. A fax or letter sent to MDA Insurance will ensure it's done in a timely and efficient manner. Is Your Newborn Covered?

If the stork visits your house and you're a Blue Cross Blue Shield subscriber, be sure to notify MDA Insurance when your baby is born. This involves filling out a membership change form and paying an additional premium to cover your little one. Just contact MDA Insurance within the first 10 days after your baby is born. We'll mail you both the necessary membership change form and the balance of the quarterly premium due. Both items must be submitted together so the records can be changed to reflect your new addition. If you have questions, please give us a call...and congratulations on your new addition!

Dentists

Individual BCS Health Insurance Plans for Dentists

Our premier health insurance program for dentists is administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan for the Michigan Dental Association. More than 5,000 MDA members participate in one of the nine individually owned and medically underwritten health insurance plan options. The MDA health insurance plan is endorsed by the Michigan Dental Association. It includes vision insurance through the VSP program. With the MDA health insurance plans, you have an advocate in your corner. MDA Insurance member service representatives work with Blue Cross on your behalf to address any health insurance claim concerns that may arise, saving you time and reducing stress.

Shingles Vaccine Information

To obtain the shingles vaccine, individually insured subcribers may have the vaccine administerd by their doctors, or obtain a prescription for Zostavax and have it admininstered at the filling pharmacy. Not all pharmacies carry Zostavax. To have it administered by the doctor, the physican must call OPTION CARE at (866) 515-1355 and have it overnighted to his or her office. The doctor will need your Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan card in order to place the call.
